【Shady CHARACTER / シェイディー・キャラクター 】は1970年代、マンハッタンでアンティークショップ”The Ruby Slippers”を営んでいたLinda.Rae.Tepper(リンダ・レイ・テッパー)と Steven Abrams (スティーブン・エイブラムス)の二人によって1979年に創設されたブランドです。二人は様々なメーカーのデッドストック商品を利用するカタチでアイウェアの製造を開始。そんな中”タート オプティカル エンタープライズ社”から当時発売されていた[ARNEL]や[FDR]などの代表モデルに魅了された二人は、ジュリアス・タート氏に製造を依頼。その熱意を同氏に認められ、それら現物の型をリミックスすることで、【Shady CHARACTER】として展開していたという歴史があります。
ブランド休止後、新たな体制で2021年に再スタート。現在展開されている”JULIUS TART OPTICAL”、”NATIVE SONS”を始め、数多くのブランドのアイウェアデザインを手掛けるTommy O’Gara (タミーオガラ)氏と、グラミー賞2011年ベストレコーディングパッケージ賞を受賞した経歴もあるMichael Carney (マイケル・カーニー)氏がタッグを組み、このユニークな歴史を持つ【Shady CHARACTER】を復刻。ブランドアドバイザーとして創設者二人を迎え展開されています。アイウェア史の中でも長く愛され続けているマスターピースモデルをリミックスし製作された、シグネチャーモデル[ARNIE]を始め、今回の復刻では新たにオリジナルの型も発表。その歴史を踏襲しながらも新たな魅力を感じさせてくれるコレクションがラインナップされています。

Shady CHARACTER is founded in 1979 by Linda.Rae.Tepper & Steven Abrams who was running vintage boutique, ”The Ruby Slippers”. They dealt with dead stock – glasses of Tart Optical Enterprise, Inc. Especially, they were fascinated by masterpieces, [ARNEL] or [FDR], and so on. Then, they ask the company to make remix models of the pieces. And Mr.Julius Tart agree to the enthusiastic request.
In 2021, 【Shady CHARACTER】is released by Tommy O’Gara that is designer for “JULIUS TART OPTICAL” and “NATIVE SONS” with Michael Carney that won Grammy’s as a designer. And also the founders, Linda and Abrams, participate as brand adviser. In the first collection, the model including [ARNIE] witch is inspired by [ARNEL], and brand new models are released. Then, the products come with the textures of “TAKIRON ROWLAND LIMITED” that is the only manufacturer in Japan specializing in plastic eyeglass frame materials with a focus on acetate sheets.
